BABY, dead in shell

Postby eblake38 on Sun Apr 18, 2010 4:40 pm

Can anyone tell me what the probable cause is for this, my amazons had 2 babies hatch out right on time, but the third and last one she laid did not hatch, was supposed to hatch on 4-15, i left it in there until today, i took it out and cracked it open, and it had started to develop, but was dead, you could see all its features, arms, legs, head, big eyes and all, if you know what causes this or have an idea, please let me know. and thanks

There are many causes of which I doubt I could list them all. That said, I have heard of eggs hatching 1-2 weeks late from the due date so if you suspect DIS then it's better to candle to see if you can see any movement, or leave in the nest for a while longer.

It was already 3 days past due, so i took it out and cracked it open, it was less than half the size of a normal chick in egg, but was developed. I hate this happened to it, 2 hatched with not problem, i am sad, but happy i do have 2 orange wings

2 healthy babies is good. I suspect that parrots sometimes do not store enough of the
necessary nutrition for the last eggs in a clutch, which is why you might have had a
fully formed but small and dead baby. Or it could have been a random genetic problem.
I've also had the first egg in a clutch not fertilized, and I've had cockatiels that laid too many eggs ... all wasted.
Again, 2 babies this year is better than no babies last year !
