Postby eblake38 on Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:11 pm

I just had a baby ow hatch yesterday, and i am new with amazon breeding, i am used to macaws. If the parents are feeding them, will their crop be full like you were syringe feeding them. Can anyone please tell me about this.

First, congratulations, and I totally understand your excitement.

After that .... there is a lot of similarities in all types of parrot babies, except for
newly hatched cockatoos ( especially goffin's) in which the crop develops and expands slowly.
So, if the baby is upright and looks hydrated with an acceptable amount of food , everything is ok.
I have never fed babies to the point of exploding, and I have only seen this happen
with parent fed (about 2 week old) cockatiels, parakeets, and lovebirds.
Beyond that point, I also have not been a fan of messing around with newly hatched babies,
if the parents are feeding it. I also have had very mellow parents who allowed close inspection ...
that was my pair of goffin's.

ok, i can only inspect for a very short period of time, like maybe 30 seconds or less, from what i can see the baby has some down on its lower back, it is kinda standing on it legs, with its head up squeaking for food, and the color looks to be normal, is this ok, this is the first time they have bread with me, i got them from another breeder who pulled all the egg and fed from day 1, so i am kinda leary if the parents will feed or not, thats why i am asking all these questions, and hoping for answers, i have had them for about 1.4 years. An i am very excited right now, this if the first fertile clutch they laid, and i am hoping for another to hatch out any time now

The baby sounds healthy. Upright and squeaking is normal, because it's for both
food and comfort, as long as you know that the crop is not empty. It should have some thick
liquid in it, and be slightly rounded.
Having the second baby hatch either 24 hours later, or 48 hours later
is ok. If you feel that the smaller baby is not getting enough care, then
you might need to pull both babies. It's actually a mistake to leave the smaller baby with
    the parents.
I've raised blue-fronts, and I'm sure that ow's have similar habits.
My lesser sulfur cockatoos were horrible for smashing their eggs, so I pulled the
eggs for incubation for a couple of years. Then I let them nest a clutch, and everything was ok,
and I pulled the babies at 3 weeks.
It's always takes a little risk, and a little faith, and it usually comes out ok.
Again, I'm very happy for you

I was able to inspect the crop today, it was turned good enough i could see it and it was rounded and not very large, and mine are hatching every 3 days, as she laid the eggs every 3 days, everything seems to be fine so far, i am just anxiious and excited, and as you said, i am scared something is going to go wrong, an i am trying to have faith that nature will nurture the right way, and hope i have faith enough to let them do what they need to do, and thanks for all the info
