Amazing Amazon—

Wanted to share a story with some Amazon People.
I volunteer at a Bird Rescue and am fairly new to birds.
I own a Cockatiel myself.
We had an Amazon that was surrendered to us this Sat.
His Owner died and he is 25 years old. Just an incredibly Beautiful Bird.
I could tell that he was really upset and scared.
Apparently the Owner’s Daughter did not take well to the bird. She said that she tried taking him but was sick of his incessant Barking like a Dog. When he came out of his carrier and was placed on a stand he really started to almost like Cry for awhile. It just amazed me how he was looking at all of us almost like he was Human. I really know that eventually he will be placed in a Great Home but it is scary to think that in a lot of cases Birds will outlive their Owner and then what happens to them ? I have to say that I am really impressed by their communicative Skills and intelligence. I have kept and loved Dogs all my life But I must say that Birds are just so incredible too. It is great to have both. I know too that An Amazon can live 60+ years if they are properly maintained and healthy. At one point I got pretty close to him physically and our Resident Amazon Person told me to be careful- Amazons are very Quick and he is obviously upset. Apparently though Amazons are somewhat easier to read than some of the other larger Parrots. I will try to get some pics of this guy next time I post.

Thank goodness for you and all who help birds in need. I have only 20 parrots now, the fewest since 1996. The greatest impetus for letting attrition decrease my flock size is the worry of what would become of them if a car wreck left me hospitalized, disabled, or dead. Half of mine are seniors, so I tell myself I don't need to worry about them because I'm only 63 and plan to be a bird perch for another 30 years. But the other half are young, and several require multiple meds each day. Their health could make it harder to find homes for them. And all, old and young, are spoiled :) They love kissing mom's lips and being loved. I never want them to go without!

Hoping hard for the heartbroken 'zon to find a wonderful home soon. Stories like yours make me wish I had more room and less anxiety. Protective light all around him!

Never give up trying to befriend him/her. It's obvious it had a wonderful home with a human it loved very much. It's grieving and "lost." Do for it what you would do for any person you know who's lost their love. Gentle & patient persistence, with some treats left for it to approach when ready? Bless you all for caring for this little lost soul. The beauty is that, with love, another relationship will form and happiness will return.
