Breeding!!!!

Postby eblake38 on Thu Oct 15, 2009 8:54 pm

I have a pair of orange wings, i have only had them since mid february, she laid eggs in late march, which were all infertile. From what i have heard that was to be expected, i was just so happy she laid so soon after i bought them, and yes they were proven for previous owner. And now they are working the box. But i have also read that they usually only breed once a year, is this true or will they likely breed this fall as well, (hoping for fertile eggs this time). And also wanting to know, should i pull the eggs and put them in an incubator or should i allow the female to do it, and if so, how long should the eggs stay with the mom before pulling, because i do not have an incubator as of yet, i have never raised amazons before, and i really do not know their breeding habits, and if i pull the eggs, will she double clutch, could soneone please help me with this, i have looked and looked on the internet about orange wing amazon and i really cant find out a whole lot about them, so anything would be very helpful.

Most zons are seasonal, they may start at the tail end of winter-beginning of spring, unless they are in a controlled environment. An infertile clutch is to be expected from 1st time breeders, or pairs that are new to each other. I wouldn't recommend pulling eggs for incubation unless you have to. You incubate when you have egg eaters, or birds with bad habits, or something really really rare. If you pull eggs, she may double clutch, but again, why pull, let the pair prove to you that they can be good parents. Also remember, when incubating, you will have to feed day 1 babies, this means every 2 or so hrs around the clock DAY AND NIGHT. The longer you leave the eggs under the birds, the better your success rate may be. You need to know your incubator to have success. You may need to "practice" the technique on other type eggs to learn. There's more to incubating than one may realize.
