He feels threatened and is warning you to leave him alone.

Try playing with him without petting him. Keep your hands away so he can relax and learn to trust you. Amazons are among the birds who least like being touched, in my experience, but they love playing. That's not hard to do with no hands!

If your bird growls at you, you need to remove him from his cage, take him somewhere, where he is not comfortable! He will be putty in your hands! You must let him know, growling is not allowed!Honestly, if my bird growled at me, I would grab his beak, tell him no, remove him from his comfort zone...and have fun with him. Removing them, from comfort zone, is very important! If my birds even lift a leg, to warn me, they are being territorial, we have issues! The behavior is not allowed! Have fun with your bird. Give him a shower, get the family involved. Blowdry them! Even if you have a bird, that tends to like one person only, don't except that behavior! SOCIALIZE your baby! My grey, will go to several people. Of course it is because she trusts them. Of course, she loves a sleepover... LOVES to chase all kids without shoes on! She is always the hit of the party! I find her, the next morning, sleeping with someone! My style of parenting, may not work for many. i don't believe in closed cages... if they want to walk out and greet me, they can! They do not leave a mess, other than usual. My birds do not chew their feathers, socialize well with my two dogs. They all get along, respect each other, and share! My style of parenting, may not work for many! It works for us. Alot of work, went into this. You must be committed. Of course my style works for my birds, because none chew their feathers, always interested in meeting someone new.... Nancy

You are in the process of establishing dominence! Treat your bird like a child. You rule! Distract him, let him know behavior, is not acceptable! Move onto play! they wll respond. Don't give up your bird because he growls... it has nothing to do with what relationship you can have in the future! Nancy... ps... I will be glad to help you! Nancy

You don't have to dominate a bird in order to teach them that you do not appreciate certain behavior. Birds are not a species that uses dominance in order to get what they want so there is no reason to dominate them. Although dominance is how it's "always" been done, does not mean this is the best way. A lot can be said for positive reinforcement.

Yes... it means your bird feels threatened! NOT a behavior you want in your bird, just needs to be addressed! Once your bird is comfortable with you, you will see it go away! Nancy

This is a form of aggressive vocalization and not all birds do this. If yours does, take a look at her surroundings. Remove anything that you think may be bothering her. A word of caution: Don’t try to pick up or touch your parrot when he growls.
