Postby CJ Furch on Mon Aug 17, 2009 7:52 pm

Is it ok if i let my blue fronted amazon walk around on the carpet while i play ball with him? is there anything in carpets that are toxic to birds? and can birds eat corn?

As long as the carpet is clean and you don't spray anything on the carpet I don't see any harm in letting Tiko down on the ground.

Amazons can eat a wide variety of foods. You should do research on what would be the best diet for him.

The list for the grains, legumes, veggies, and fruits are mostly from the Feeding Feathers YH-group. The list of foods to avoid is from Buffalo Parrots. List of seeds, well I just looked at a few packages of bird food to get the ingredients off of. I did add a few things to the lists but didn't remove anything.

FF recommends feeding 1 part legumes to 2 part grains, and for this to consist of 40% of the fresh diet. Another 40% would be a variety of veggies, and the last 10% fruits and 10% treats. All of this can be mixed together as a 'mash' diet. Fresh foods should take up a minimum of 25% of the diet, but can take up as much as 90% with treats, pellets, nuts, and seeds taking up the rest. Sprouted seeds are healthier than dry seeds.

Cooked grains - can also be sprouted
    • Millet
    • Quinoa
    • Amaranth
    • Whole Oats
    • Hulless Barley

Cooked legumes - or sprouted with 1/4" tails
    • Adzuki
    • Mung
    • Sprouting Peas
    • Lentils
    • 13 Bean Soup minus Spice Packet - must be cooked, these beans are harder to digest

    • Pumpkin
    • Carrots
    • Acorn or Butternut Squash
    • Red or Green Pepper
    • Kale

    • Mustard Greens
    • Collard Greens

Thank you VERY much for doing that. I just have one more question what does it mean when they grind their beaks? is it just because hes still very nervous because of the new environment?

Usually, when a bird grinds it's beak, it means it is content. Mine grind their beaks most often at bed time after I turn out the lights.

Carpet is fine as long as its clean.
Now to really throw you a curve on want to feed your amazon. Beside everything already named ours eat everything in moderation we do.
For example tonight they had Corn dogs. Our nape loves to get the piece where he get to hold the stick and eat his piece off the stick.
Last night it was homemade chicken and dumpling. Sunday morning blueberry pancakes. We let them have a bit of everything we do. They each have their own little bowl and get some in their bowl. Here are a few examples for you

    Stuffed peppers & mashed potatoes
chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and veggie
    Meatloaf and baked potatoes
    steak & baked Potatoes
    Mac & Cheese
    Pot Roast
    Goulash
At Thanksgiving & Christmas they get a bit of everything including pumpkin pie
Cereal w/ a bit of milk (Nape will not touch it without milk)

    No chocolate, coffee, etc though

We have 3 Amazon and our Avain vet says keep doing what ever we are doing because they are all very health.
