Postby CJ Furch on Sun Aug 16, 2009 8:46 pm

I am really stressed because i just spent $1600 on a blue fronted amazon and i really would like it to talk. He is only 3 months old. I wanted to know if blue fronted amazons are known to talk and what is the best way to train them to talk. PLease answer.
Thanks a lot!!

I don't know where you live but that seems like a lot for a zon. Although parrots are "known" for talking, dogs, cats, finches, mynahs, and starlings can also talk - or at least learn to mimic. Out of all the birds I've kept, only two could talk or at least mimic - but talking, to me, is not a "requirement" - its more like the icing on the cake! Fantastic if they do, but otherwise, I don't really care! They are, after all, birds, not mini humans who *need* to talk in order to make me happy.

If you want your amazon to learn to talk (and not just mimic) then you need to teach her things like you would an infant. Show them what objects are, tell them about the ojects, ask them about the objects, and just teach them. Tell your bird what you are doing, where you are going, when you will be back, etc. It's no guarantee that your bird will learn to talk, but it may improve the chances.

Thank you very much. I live in South Hamptons, Long Island NY. I thought that $1600 was a lot too but he was the only bird place around me.

    Hi:

We have a BF amazon male, Tia, that just turned 3 in May. He started talking at about 6 months and hasn't stopped LOL. He talks very clear - calls both our dogs by name, whistles for them, tells them to "sit", answers the phone with "hello?" sings opera (or attempts to that is  talks to the other birds and calls them by the appropriate names. He even disciplines the birds if they get noisy with a "Molli - stop that! Bad girl!! Be QUIET!!!" or if the baby conures start in he admonishes them gently with "no - no - shhhhh" if that doesn't work then a full blown "I said QUIET!!" ensues. He does not use these phrases unless the other birds are being noisy. So, he has learned the appropriate times to say these things as well as the birds names, dogs names, which dog is which, etc. Truly amazes me no end. On another note - I finished handfeeding him and he bonded to my hubby. He will strut, pin his eyes, and call me "sweetheart" but if I try to pet him he will lunge at me beak open. I still am the one who cleans his cage, puts in new toys, and feeds him every day but I am not allowed, by him, to handle him. Enjoy your amazon - we wouldn't trade ours for the world.

No problem! :D We didn't repeat words over and over nor actively try to teach Tia to talk. His cage was in our family room the first 2 years and he just learned by what he heard us say. He is a real kick. Good luck with your baby.
