Most parrots don't talk. My blue-fronted 'zon is 15 years old and says a half dozen words. I don't remember how soon he learned the first ones, probably 2-3 years.

Parrots have the ability to talk, but most don't, for whatever reasons. Only 3 of my 20 speak at all and, like the 'zon who speaks a half dozen words, the other two have very limited vocabularies. It's great when parrots choose to speak our language, but that's not why we love them. It's just the icing on the cake! The only way to know you're getting a parrot who'll talk is to adopt one who already speaks. Even then, some will sometimes choose to quit talking. I adopted an African grey a couple years ago who still hasn't spoken, even though her former family says she talked with them.
