: I have just started hatching my first clutch of lovebirds. They are peachface. Hen is Lutino and the cock I think is Am yellow pied. So far two chicks have hatched and they both have almost red fuzz. The lady I got them from said she has never seen red fuzz before. Is it an indication of anything? I have looked through the internet and found one picture that looks pretty much like them. but it doesn't tell me anything. I am very new at this. I hope this is not one of those questions that is a waist of your time. Thank you for taking the time to at least read this.

Hi Tina,
Good question, not a waste of time. The color of a baby lovebird's down can tell you it's coloring, based on the parents. Your parent lovebirds are both what's called green series lovebirds (Lutino, normal Green, Olive, American Yellow, Green Pied). Green series babies have orangish, reddish down. Blue series (Cremino, Cinnamon, Dutch Blue, Slate, Blue Pied, Violet) babies have whitish color down. Lutino is a sex linked color but your male must either show the Lutino coloring or genetically carry the color and the hen must be a Lutino in order for you to get visual Lutino babies. If your hen is not Lutino and your male shows or carries the gene for Lutino, male babies will inherit the gene from their dad and all visual Lutino babies will be hens.

Hope this information is helpful.
