ASC roster information is private and only given to members. However, many non-members ask for breeder recommendations, either to get started in the hobby, or to find a good quality pet. So, this Breeder Referral List was established as a voluntary way for ASC members to authorize contacting them about obtaining American Singer canaries. The webmaster cannot and will not give out any additional names, so please don't ask!
American Singer is a copyrighted name and only birds bred to the standards and banded with closed, registered American Singer bands can legally be called American Singers. Some members might also raise other breeds of canaries, so it is up to the buyer to verify that birds they purchase have the ASC band. It is recommended that the buyer visually verify the entire band number on the bird, and that number should also be on the receipt.
The American Singers Club, Inc. assumes no responsibilities for claims of its members, regarding either quality or health of their birds. This information is provided to the public for convenience, buyers and sellers assume all risks!
Please be considerate of people's time when you contact them. While some breeders love to talk about canaries for hours to total strangers who phone them, others do not. Some breeders who used to be on this list have requested to be removed because they were getting too many calls, many just asking for free advice and general information. Maybe one of them was near you! So, please limit your initial questions to whether they currently have birds available, or how to get on their waiting list. Then, simply ask if they have time to talk or are willing to answer more questions!
Since bird breeders tend to be morning people, it is best to call before 9 p.m. their time. Be aware of time zone differences if calling out of your area.

Many people have successfully shipped canaries through the U.S. Postal Service, including USPS Expidited Services. However shipping canaries through the mail is illegal! Be aware that it is a misdemeanor crime that is punishable by confiscation of the bird(s), payment of fines (both shipper and receiver) and possible imprisonment of up to 6 months in jail.

For those who insist mailing canaries can be done, realize that they have been lucky because of ignorant or apathetic clerks, or they have deliberately misrepresented the type of bird by falsely labeling it as quail or poultry chicks and their clerk did not know the difference or did not check. There is no guarentee that this ruse will work in the future at their post office or yours. If they say that was an old regulation and shipping is now allowed, just check the DMM link above, it will have the current information.

Some airlines permit shipping of birds as air freight but rules vary and can change. Don't assume that what worked in the past is still allowed, check each time!

International shipping is much more difficult, but not impossible. You need to book quarantine space and obtain an import permit with the destination country's responsible agency (their equivalent of the USDA). The exporter then needs to either buy or build a box for transportation that meets International Airline regulations, and these get more comprehensive each year. Veterinary Certificates, transport and quarantine costs will probably amount to $50 to $100 per bird depending on the number being imported. Usually only the quarantine costs change depending on numbers, transport and vet bills are the same for 1 or 100 birds.
